Embark on a journey into the rich language and culture of Slovakia.
Historically, Allegheny County has been one of the great gathering places for Slovaks in the United States. Over 100,000 people in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area have Slovak heritage, and the government of Slovakia has an honorary consulate in Pittsburgh!
Children up to age 15 are invited to attend this language camp.
Božena Hilko, a native of Slovakia, is a veteran in teaching Slovak language to children and adults. She grew up in Michalovce, Zemplin region, and graduated from University of Šafarik in Prešov, Slovakia and University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with master’s degree in Foreign Language education. Before moving to Pittsburgh, she was a high school teacher in Slovakia. She also coached high
school students in gymnastics and basketball.
Božena has a great passion for Slovak culture and customs and loves passing her knowledge of it to her students. In her hometown she was a dancer and, later, a dance teacher in the folk group Zemplin for many years. Here in Pittsburgh she has choreographed numerous dances for Pittsburgh Slovakians folk group for over 20 years.
There is no fee for the class, but there is a small fee for the Kids’ Slovak Book and the study material. Parents are required to register and fill out the application for each child as soon as possible.
