OneClickDigital Audiobooks Now Available

OneClickDigital (formerly NetLibrary) downloadable audiobooks are now available. The OneClick library includes close to 3000 titles from Recorded Books, with additional titles added quarterly. There is no limit to the number of people who may check out an item at one time, and you can set your own checkout period, from 1 to 21 days.

OneClick audiobooks are compatible with PCs, Mac computers, and iOS devices, with Android support due to arrive later this year. For more information, or to start checking out items today, visit the OneClickDigital site for the Allegheny County library consortium.

Holiday Closing: Memorial Day, Monday, May 28

Dormont Library will be closed all day on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day. We will re-open with our regular hours on Tuesday, May 29.

The outside drop box will be open on library holidays, but returns will not be processed until we re-open. To avoid fines, please return or renew your items ahead of time.

The board and staff of Dormont Public Library would like to wish all of our patrons a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Women’s Self-Defense Classes: May 10, 17, 24, and 31, 7-8 PM

Learn the fundamentals of self-defense from instructor Mike Moscato. Mike is a practitioner of martial arts for more than 20 years in various disciplines. He is currently a member of the Yin Cheng Gong Fa organization in Pittsburgh.

Classes will be held in Dormont Public Library’s Keith Room, on the second floor. Class size is limited to 10 women ages 12 and up. Attendance at all four classes is required. Call 412-657-0027 for more details; a signup sheet is available at Dormont Public Library. The cost for the four-week course is $35. Make checks payable to “Mike Moscato”.

Spring 50/50 Raffle

Dormont Public Library’s spring 50/50 raffle runs through June 30. Tickets are $1. The winner will be contacted by phone.

50/50s are held quarterly, don’t miss out! Proceeds support the Library’s programs and services.

e-Reader Compatible Digital Books: Now Supporting Kindle

eBooks and eAudiobooks are now available through partnership with OverDrive. Visit the Allegheny County Libraries OverDrive page to browse or search for eBooks and eAudiobooks.

The OverDrive Media Console software is required to view or listen to OverDrive content. Most Windows and Mac computers are compatible with the OverDrive Media Console, as well as iOS and Android mobile devices. Complete instructions for installation and use of the OverDrive Media Console software are available from OverDrive. New users may also wish to view a video tour of the OverDrive software. (Adobe Flash required for video tour.)

OverDrive eBooks are compatible with select models of e-reader devices, now including Amazon’s Kindle. Due to digital rights management, OverDrive eAudiobooks may not be compatible with iPod or other portable media players.

Add Leaves to Our Tree With Your Donations

Dormont Public Library would like to introduce our beautiful new tree mural, painted by Maria DeSimone Prascak of Maria’s Ideas. Right now, this tree has no leaves, but you can add one with your donation of $25 or more. Each leaf will have you or your organization’s name printed on it, and will be placed on our tree in gratitude for your giving. People or organizations who have donated to the library recently will also be receiving leaves.

We’re also announcing a contest to give our tree a name, and anyone can submit their idea. Just write or type your suggestion on a piece of paper and include your name and contact information. The Dormont Library Board of Directors will choose the winner, who will receive a leaf of their own on the tree as well as a gift card (value and merchant to be announced).

Local Artists: Get Your Work Seen!

Dormont Public Library is seeking submissions from local artists and photographers to display artwork on our walls. All pieces must be suitable for a general audience, should be framed, and may be originals or prints. We’ll show as many pieces as space allows, small or large. A plate with your name and the title of the work (if any) will be posted alongside. The pieces on display will be rotated every one to three months.

Handmade Bookmarks – $1.00

Tail Waggin’ Storytime

Enjoy a unique storytime for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. In this program, children are invited to practice their reading skills on special storytime listening dogs that will be visiting the library. This program meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 PM. Registration is required, and enrollment is limited to sixteen. Please call 412-531-8754 to register. Storytime listening dogs are provided by Therapy Dogs International.
